Website of Nigeria’s health insurance scheme has been down for weeks

For at least five weeks, the website of Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has been down, healthnews.ng can exclusively report.

Attention was first drawn to the website early June 2019 when healthnews.ng can exclusively report. was conducting a separate investigation into another issue at the NHIS which continues to be in the news, the latest being the recent appointment of a new head.

Officials of the NHIS told healthnews.ng they were aware of website’s offline status and promised the website would soon be online. But several weeks later, the website remains offline.

When the website was accessible it contained documents and files that would anyone that was interacting with the scheme to do so as soon—and as easy—as possible. But the scheme’s officials told healthnews.ng that individuals seeking any documents from the NHIS should walk-in to any of its offices nationwide.

It would be recalled that early July 2019, healthnews.ng appointed Prof. Mohammed Sambo as the new head of Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“Following the recommendations of report by an Independent Fact-Finding Panel on National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the termination of appointment of the Current Executive Secretary, Prof. Usman Yusuf who has been on administrative leave and has approved the appointment of Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo as the new Executive Secretary,” the health ministry said in a statement.
