Nigeria’s Health minister confirms reinstatement of suspended NHIS Head

President Buhari reinstates Usman Yusuf, the suspended NHIS chief

Suspended NHIS chief Usman Yusuf is back

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf who was suspended by the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole has been reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The letter of reinstatement was sent to Prof Isaac Adewole on Tuesday evening.

Mr. Yusuf was suspended by the Minister of Health, Mr. Adewole, in June 2017, following allegations of gross misconduct, after which a panel was commissioned by the minister to investigate the matter.

A panel setup by Adewole found Yusuf culpable of infractions that ranged from nepotism to theft of public funds.

Confirming the development, Adewole said he had received the reinstatement letter.

“It is true that the president has reinstated him,” the minister said.

According to Premium Times, the president did not consider Yusuf’s indictment by a ministerial panel before reinstating him. While Yusuf was found culpable in many areas according to the letter which extended his suspension, Adewole was awaiting Mr president’s directive.

“Please refer to my earlier letter ref C.405/1/132, dated 6th July 2017, suspending you from office for three months to allow for an interrupted administrative, investigative committee to look into the various allegations against you including that of monumental fraud, gross abuse of office and nepotism inimical to the NHIS scheme under your leadership,” the letter read.

“While awaiting Mr President’s directive and considering that the committee found you culpable in many areas of your performance as the executive secretary of the NHIS, I am further extending your suspension from office pending the decision of his Excellency Mr President C-in-C on the report.”

The reinstatement letter urged Yusuf to work closely with the minister upon resumption.
