WHO Maintains Global Alert as Mpox Cases Surge Across Borders

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General has upheld the declaration of mpox as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), following advice from the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) Emergency Committee. The decision was made during the Committee’s second meeting on the ongoing mpox upsurge.

This confirmation comes amidst a rising number of cases and the disease’s continued geographic spread. Operational challenges in managing the outbreak and the critical need for a coordinated global response also factored into the decision.

“The upsurge of mpox remains a pressing concern requiring sustained global attention and collaboration,” the WHO stated.

The outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has since expanded into neighboring countries, exacerbating public health challenges in the region. The initial PHEIC declaration was made on 14 August 2024, as cases surged in multiple areas.

The WHO plans to release a comprehensive report of the Emergency Committee meeting next week. The report will include Temporary Recommendations from the Director-General to guide countries and partners in tackling the crisis.

The committee continues to stress the importance of a cohesive response to address the outbreak, ensure resource allocation, and mitigate the risks of further spread.
