Following its concerns about the handling of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the President Donald Trump-led US government recently decided to freeze funding meant for the organisation.

Dr Matshidi Moeti, regional director for WHO African region, has described Africa as a continent that could be impacted by the decision of the US government, especially in the middle of a pandemic which she said WHO Afro region requires USD300 million.

Beyond COVID-19 response, Moeti added that HIV programs and Africa’s lastmile journey towards eradicating polio on the continent can also be threatened.
